Edina is a city located within Hennepin County, Minnesota, situated immediately southwest of Minneapolis. Although it is a 95% developed metropolitan community today, Edina began as a small farming and milling community in the 1860s.
Major highways running through or are near Edina include: MN State Highways 62 and 100 (dividing Edina into four sections), U.S. Route 169 and MN State Highway 100 (running north and south.), and Interstate 494 and MN State Highway 62 (extending east and west.) MN State Highway 7 is within three miles (5 km) of the city. Interstate 394 is within five miles. Many of the names given to the streets in Edina today are in fact named after families whose farms once occupied that area, such as: Grimes Avenue, Code Avenue, Gleason Road, Cooper Avenue, and Wyman Avenue.
More than 95% of Edina is comprised of residential areas, making it the largest portion of the city. Some major neighborhoods include Indian Hills, Highlands, Morningside, Viking Hills, Country Club District, Cahill Village, Interlachen, South Harriet Park, Rolling Green, Sunnyslope, Parkwood Knolls, White Oaks and Hilldale. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau reports the city as having a total area of 41.5 km² (16.0 mi²). 40.8 km² (15.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (1.87%) is water. According to the 2000 Census, Edina’s population was 47,425.
Edina has a reputation for being one of the most affluent suburbs of Minneapolis. Edina citizens are considered wealthy. Median income for a household in the city was $76,805 in 2007, and the median income for a family was $114,673, compared to $44,478 for Minneapolis and $55,082 for the state of Minnesota.
